NBN Connection Types
The type of NBN connection available to your property depends on the infrastructure in your area. Each connection type has different characteristics that affect speed, reliability, and what internal cabling may be required.
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP): Fibre optic cable runs directly to your building, terminating at an NBN connection box inside the property. FTTP delivers the highest speeds available on the NBN — up to 1 Gbps on eligible plans — and is the most reliable connection type. If your property has FTTP, you have the best possible foundation for business internet.
- Fibre to the Node (FTTN): Fibre runs to a street cabinet, known as the node, with the final connection to your property using the existing copper phone line. FTTN speeds depend heavily on the distance between your property and the node and the quality of the copper line. Maximum speeds typically reach 100 Mbps, although many properties achieve less. Internal telephone cabling quality can directly affect performance, with old, degraded, or poorly terminated copper wiring potentially reducing speeds.
- Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): FTTC operates similarly to FTTN, but the fibre extends closer to your property, typically terminating at a distribution point in the street or footpath. The shorter copper connection generally provides better speeds and more consistent performance than FTTN.
- Fibre to the Building (FTTB): Common in apartment buildings and commercial complexes, FTTB brings fibre to a central communications room within the building. The final connection to individual premises uses existing internal cabling, typically copper phone lines or Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet in newer buildings. Performance can therefore depend on the quality of the building's internal cabling infrastructure.
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC): HFC uses existing pay-TV coaxial cable infrastructure. It can deliver high speeds, although performance may vary during periods of high network demand. An NBN connection box is installed inside the property and connects to your router via Ethernet.
- Fixed wireless and satellite: These connection types are generally used where fixed-line infrastructure is unavailable. Fixed wireless connects your property to a nearby NBN tower using an external antenna, while satellite services provide coverage to remote areas. Both can have higher latency and different speed or data limitations compared with fixed-line connections.
Internal Cabling: Where Most Problems Start
NBN Co is responsible for delivering the connection to your property. From there, your internal cabling, patch panels, wall sockets, routers, switches, and other network equipment play an important role in determining the performance experienced by your devices.
For businesses, several common internal cabling issues can affect connection quality:
- Old telephone wiring: FTTN and FTTC connections rely on copper cabling for part of the connection to your premises. If internal telephone cabling is decades old, has degraded insulation, corroded joints, or passes through areas exposed to moisture, it may limit connection performance. Replacing ageing cabling with a new direct run to the router location can improve signal quality.
- Star wiring vs daisy chain: Older properties may have telephone cabling connected from one socket to another throughout the building. Every additional junction can introduce noise or signal loss. A dedicated cable run from the entry point directly to the router location removes unnecessary intermediate connections.
- Data cabling from the router to your devices: Once the NBN connection reaches your router, your internal network becomes responsible for carrying data to workstations, wireless access points, VoIP phones, CCTV systems, and other equipment. Cat6 data cabling is a practical standard for new internal network installations and provides a reliable foundation for modern business networks.
- Wall socket condition: Old, corroded, damaged, or incorrectly terminated sockets may introduce resistance and noise. For connection types that depend on telephone cabling, unnecessary sockets and joins can also affect signal quality.
Optimising Your NBN Connection
Once your physical infrastructure is in good condition, the next step is making sure your network equipment and configuration allow you to get the best possible performance from your connection.
- Position your router centrally: If your business relies heavily on Wi-Fi, locate the router as centrally as practical and away from thick walls, metal objects, and other sources of interference. Larger offices are usually better served by dedicated wireless access points connected through Ethernet rather than relying entirely on the router's built-in Wi-Fi.
- Use a business-grade router: Business networks may need to support substantially more simultaneous connections than a typical household. A business-grade router can provide greater processing capacity and features such as Quality of Service (QoS), allowing important traffic such as VoIP and video conferencing to be prioritised over less time-sensitive network activity.
- Separate your networks: Businesses providing customer or guest Wi-Fi should consider separating that traffic from their operational network. This helps prevent guest activity from competing with critical services such as point-of-sale systems, VoIP phones, security equipment, and internal applications.
- Consider a backup connection: If losing internet connectivity would interrupt business operations or revenue, a 4G or 5G failover connection can provide additional resilience. Compatible business-grade routers can automatically switch to a secondary connection if the primary NBN service becomes unavailable.
Preparing a New Business Premises for NBN
If you are fitting out a new office, retail premises, warehouse, or other commercial property, planning your internal network infrastructure before the fit-out is completed can save significant disruption later.
Consider where your NBN equipment, router, communications cabinet, wireless access points, workstations, VoIP phones, CCTV cameras, and other networked equipment will be located. Installing the required data and phone cabling while walls and ceilings are accessible creates a cleaner installation and makes future expansion easier.
