What Is Structured Cabling?

Structured cabling is a standardised approach to building network infrastructure defined by international standards such as TIA/EIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801. Rather than running individual cables from each device directly to a switch, structured cabling organises the entire installation into a hierarchical system with clearly defined components.

  • Entrance Facility: The point where external services — including NBN, telephone, and fibre — enter the building and connect to the internal network.
  • Equipment Room: The central location housing servers, core network switches, patch panels, UPS (uninterruptible power supply), and other core infrastructure. In smaller offices, this may be a dedicated communications rack in a secure cupboard. In larger installations, it may be a purpose-built server room with controlled access and appropriate ventilation or climate control.
  • Telecommunications Room (TR): In multi-floor buildings, each floor may have a telecommunications room where horizontal cable runs from workstations and other devices terminate at patch panels. The telecommunications room connects back to the main equipment room through backbone cabling.
  • Backbone Cabling: The cabling connecting the main equipment room to telecommunications rooms on other floors or in other buildings. Backbone connections commonly use Cat6a or fibre optic cabling depending on distance, network speed, and bandwidth requirements.
  • Horizontal Cabling: Cable runs from patch panels in the telecommunications or equipment room to individual wall outlets at workstations, meeting rooms, wireless access points, and other device locations. Cat6 is commonly used for horizontal cabling in modern office environments.
  • Work Area: The final connection point, including the wall outlet, faceplate, and patch lead that connects the user's device to the network.

Each layer of the system is installed, tested, labelled, and documented so that individual cable runs can be identified, traced, and managed without guesswork.

Why Structured Cabling Outperforms Ad Hoc Installation

The benefits of structured cabling become particularly clear when something goes wrong, new equipment needs to be added, or the office layout changes.

  • Faster troubleshooting: When every cable is labelled and documented on a patch panel schedule, identifying which run serves a particular outlet can take seconds. In an ad hoc installation, tracing an unlabelled cable through a ceiling cavity can take significantly longer and increase downtime.
  • Simpler moves and changes: Offices evolve as teams grow, desks move, and departments relocate. With structured cabling, moving a workstation to another outlet can often be handled through a patch panel change rather than requiring an entirely new cable run.
  • Consistent performance: Structured cabling installations are tested against applicable standards. Cable runs can be checked for factors such as length, attenuation, crosstalk, and return loss, helping ensure consistent network performance across the installation.
  • Cleaner infrastructure: Structured systems use organised racks, patch panels, cable management, trays, and appropriate pathways. Good cable management is not simply cosmetic — it reduces congestion around network equipment, lowers the risk of accidental disconnections, and makes future maintenance and expansion easier.
  • Reduced long-term costs: While planning and installing structured cabling may involve a greater upfront investment than adding individual cables as they are needed, it can reduce troubleshooting time, simplify expansion, minimise downtime, and make future network changes easier to manage.

Planning Considerations for Your Office

If you are fitting out a new office or planning a network upgrade, several important factors should be addressed during the design phase rather than after the fit-out is complete.

  • Density and future growth: Consider how many data points each workstation requires today and what may be needed in the future. A typical desk may require connections for a workstation, VoIP phone, docking equipment, printer, or other devices. Installing additional outlets during the initial fit-out is generally easier than adding new cable runs later. Allowing spare capacity can also make future team growth easier to accommodate.
  • Wireless access point locations: Reliable Wi-Fi depends heavily on access point placement. Each access point typically requires a ceiling-mounted data connection and may use Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing both power and data to be delivered through the same cable. Planning access point locations during the cabling design helps reduce coverage gaps and avoids the need for additional cabling after the fit-out.
  • Meeting rooms and collaboration spaces: Meeting rooms may require data connections for video conferencing equipment, displays, wireless presentation systems, VoIP or conference phones, and other connected devices. Planning these connections early avoids exposed cables, temporary extensions, and retrofitting after the room is finished.
  • Server room or communications rack location: Network equipment should be positioned in a secure, accessible, and appropriately ventilated location. The location should also account for maximum cable run lengths and provide sufficient room for switches, patch panels, UPS equipment, and future expansion. Electrical requirements, including an appropriate supply from the switchboard, should be considered as part of the same planning process.
  • Cable specification: Cat6 is commonly used for horizontal runs in modern office environments. Cat6a or fibre optic cabling may be more appropriate for backbone connections, longer distances, higher bandwidth requirements, or infrastructure intended to support future network upgrades.
  • Compliance and documentation: A professional structured cabling installation should include testing and certification of the installed cable runs, clear labelling, a patch panel schedule showing which ports correspond to each outlet, and appropriate documentation of the completed installation.

Planning for Power, Data and Security

Network infrastructure should not be considered in isolation. Modern offices increasingly rely on connected systems including VoIP phones, wireless access points, CCTV cameras, access control, meeting room technology, and other IP-based equipment.

Planning electrical and data cabling together allows power outlets, data points, communications racks, security equipment, and network devices to be positioned according to how the office will actually operate. It can also reduce the need for modifications after walls, ceilings, and workstations have already been installed.

Where Power over Ethernet is being used for devices such as wireless access points, VoIP phones, or compatible security cameras, the network switches, cabling specification, and power requirements should also be considered during the initial design.

Building a Network That Can Scale

A structured cabling system should support more than your current headcount. Business requirements change as teams grow, technology evolves, and more equipment becomes network-connected.

Providing spare rack capacity, additional patch panel ports, appropriately specified backbone cabling, and extra data outlets during the initial installation can make future expansion considerably easier. It also reduces the likelihood that new technology will need to be connected through temporary or poorly organised cabling.
